ABOUT

Cuban painter and sculptor. Born on February 20, 1978, in La Habana, Cuba. Graduated from “20 de Octubre” School of Fine Arts, also attended San Alejandro Art Academy.” Because of the impediments and obstacles in his career, He decided to get out of Cuba. Currently he resides in Miami, Florida.

MECHANICAL CUTTLEFISH

Description: Created by welding, forming and bending of different metals in flat and solid form. Body was hand carved out of Jatoba wood from the Amazon.

 

Materials: Jatoba woods, Brass, Stainless and Mild stell.

1950 CHEVY POMPANO

Description: Elaborated by welding, bending, riveting, grinding and forming of different metals.

Finishes involving grinding, aging and texturing metal. Center pieces are hubcaps from a wrecked 1950 Chevrolet automobile.

 

Materials: Mild steel, Aluminum and Stainless Steel.

THE MEAN ANGLER

Description: Elaborated by welding, bending, grinding and forming metals. Kitchen utensils were used for teeth, spine and other details. Tongue is a hubcap from a 1950’s Chevrolet automobile and eyes are carburetor covers from a motorcycle. This sculpture is a functional lamp.

MAHINATOR

Description: Elaborated by welding, bending, grinding, and forming different metals Upper half was casted from real fish and finished with automotive paint and aging patinas. Belly of the fish is a horn tank from a 1960’s bicycle.

Engaging with a material that is by nature cold, rigid and inflexible challenges my creativity. The nature of steel makes it the most expressive material for me as an artist. It is a very gratifying medium, and ways to impact the surface physically and chemically are endless.

 

Working with metal is quite an adventure. It is always difficult but yet so rewarding. Handling this uncooperative substance can be very challenging. Trying to balance the manipulation between the material and the elements is very complex, but it is what keeps constantly occupying my thoughts.
